HH question

From: (rbngdfello@aol.com) | Date: 2003-08-16 11:09:53 UTC-04:00
We're new at this, but we have an idea of a HH we'd like to plant. Do HHs
usually travel entirely at random? Are they ever planted with a suggested
itinerary? For example, might an HH express a desire to travel the Appalachian
Trail or, like a Canadian goose, go south for the winter? We don't want to give
away our idea, but I wonder if anyone has tried a "guided" HH. Would this be
an exercise in frustration? Input as to foreseeable pitfalls would be greatly
appreciated.

Yes you can express a desire for a HH to have a destination. I just had a HH that I wanted to go from CT to a specific dog letterboxer in Oregon. It did get there. There is also a HH that was sent from Oregon with the destination of getting to my dog Molly, here in CT. It is supposed to be pretty close now. A specific route would be a little more difficult to maintain but why not try it. It may or may not work. I would say it's worth trying...Chuck and Molly

I created a HH last year called "The Homesick Moose".
Originally, I was going to plant it at a state park in
Maine, but the rangers asked me not too, so I ended up
bringing it back to MA, and turning it into a HH with
the goal of making it home to ME. Last I heard, he'd
made it home briefly before taking off on adventures
elsewhere....

I have heard of some that have desired destination. I believe there was one from the East Coast that wanted to make it to the Pacific Ocean. I think that most letterboxers would enjoy helping an HH make it to a desired destination. It would also make the hitchhiker more challenging as a 'boxer tries to help it on its way.

anyone seen her recently??)

I would like it if all my HH's made it to Northern Calif. New
Zealand or Australia would be the ultimate! I live in the DC area.

HH question

So if one finds a hitchhiker does one report this anywhere?
And if the same person has the opportunity to place the HH in either a
spot close to it's first home or thousands of miles away, would the
greater distance be better? I imagine it would be...

Hi,

Please use this link to report and track HHs...

http://alum.wpi.edu/~p_miner/travelers.html

Also, it is up to you where you plant the HH. Just don't tell where
you planted it. Only say where you found the thing and when.

Hope this helps,
Mark

Unless the box/carver requests the placement location be posted (as
with the HH Critter Race and the 2004 Campaign Trail HH Race)

I like to hear about my hitchhikers where abouts. You can post them here on this list or there is also a HH yahoo list.

As for where to put it I always try to put HHs in a high traffic area to keep them moving. It depends on the HH as to where I decide to place it. If it has been stuck in one area or state for quite a while I try to give it a boost and hide it a distance from where I found it but if it hasn't been moved much I just try to get it back out there ASAP!

Now I know others feel you should earn HHs and only hide them in challenging boxes.

There is no right or wrong, I just like to keep them on the move!!!

Besides posting on the "travellers" group, I also e-mail the person
who launched the HH if that information is included with the
hitchhiker. So far 100% of them have replied that they are pleased to
know that their HH is still out there travelling in letterboxland.

Just more it to the next letterbox & let people know you found it & it is on
its way to name of state or area would be nice. That's what I would do.
